Rebirth in Sylvia Plaths Lady Lazarus, Fever 103, Getting There, and C

Rebirth in Lady Lazarus, Fever 103, Getting There, and Cut  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚   The Ariel-period poems of Sylvia Plath demonstrate her desire for rebirth, to escape the body that was "drummed into use" by men and society. I will illustrate the different types of rebirth with examples from the Ariel poems, including "Lady Lazarus," "Fever 103," "Getting There," and "Cut." "Lady Lazarus," the last of the October poems, presents Plath as the victim with her aggression turned towards "her male victimizer (33)." Lady Lazarus arises from Herr Doktor's ovens as a new being, her own incarnation, "the victim taking on the powers of the victimizers and drumming herself into uses that are her own" (33). Linda Bundtzen also sees the poem as "an allegory about the woman artist's struggle for autonomy. The female creature of a male artist-god is asserting independent creative powers" (33). Plath confronts Herr Doktor: Herr God, Herr Lucifer Beware Beware. Out of the ash I rise with my red hair And I eat men like air. (Plath 246-247) Lady Lazarus after her psychic death became stronger than her creator: " Male- female antagonism ends with the woman defiantly asserting power over her body and releasing its energies for her own ends" (Bundtzen 233). While the outcome of the poem is positive, "Plath turns on herself, identifying with her oppressor, and sadistically punishes her body in the process of recreating it" (Bundtzen 237). Plath did not see the rebirth process as a pleasant experience, but one that is expected of her "I guess you could say I've got a call" (Plath 245). She, however, sees the benefits that come from her suffering and continues the process again and again. "Fever 103" is also about a women releasing herself from... ...poems what she thought she could not or did not achieve in life: the ability to do as she wanted, to be a mother and wife but not constricted into a domestic hell or to be pinned down by the oppressive society which did not accept her for being a poetess. She was able to "still speak from within her "deeper self" through her writing" (Kinsey-Clinton 1).    Works Cited Alvarez, A. Sylvia Plath : A Memoir. New York: Harper and Row, 1985. Values Education Essay -- Education

A multitude of complex and contentious legal issues face individuals and groups alike in Australia on a day-to-day basis. By notion, Legal Studies is then intended as an opportunity for students in their senior years of schooling to develop knowledge and tangible skills, as well as shape the values, attitudes and beliefs necessary to enhance their awareness and ability to actively participate as informed, proactive and critical members of society (Queensland Studies Authority, 2007). To effectively navigate the legal and moral mindfield that beckons, it is vital for students to be informed about their rights and responsibilities within legislation (Eekelaark, 1992). Essential to the progression of students through the syllabus is the concept of Values Education, which when taught in conjunction with Productive Pedagogies models in the classroom describes explicit or implicit school-based activities which promotes a student’s knowledge and understanding of values, which develop s the skills and dispositions of students so they can enact particular values in their everyday lives as individuals and members of the community (Queensland Government Department of Education and Training, 2004). In Queensland, Legal Studies consists of six prescribed sections of study throughout Year 11 and 12: â€Å"The legal system†; â€Å"Crime and society†; â€Å"Civil obligations†; â€Å"You, the law and society† (renting and buying; family; jobs; sport; environment; consumers; technology; rights and responsibilities – at least two units to be chosen); â€Å"Independent study† and â€Å"Law in a changing society† whereby students collect, organise, analyse and synthesise relevant information and evaluate its quality and validity across a variety of sources (Queensland Studies Aut... ...ueensland Government Department of Education and Training (2004). Human Physical Appearance

How many times have you formed an impression of someone even before you got to know him or her well? How many times you felt bad because you were judged? Why do people misjudge? It is because, we’re human. We all misjudge all the time. It is easy to misjudge people based on outward appearances. People nowadays are judgmental; they’re basing their behavior towards others through physical appearance. Though appearances people create their own stereotypes and misjudge the other person. It is easy to create a mental prototype through basing something on an individual’s physical attributes. Almost everyone in his or her lifetime has misjudged someone at least once in her/his lifetimes. A lot of times people misjudge others by the way they look and a lot of people do not know how that it can sometimes affect or hurt someone. We know that it is wrong for other people to look upon others and judge them but nobody is perfect. People misjudged others is by their appearance because they think that appearance is everything. In conclusion, everyone has either been misjudged or judged at least once in his/her lifetime. Misjudging someone can be very unfair to others and in some cases you never know when other people are going through the same thing as you had gone through at some point of your life. Nobody should judge a person by their appearance. When people misjudge other people, they don’t give them the chance to experience a good and healthy life without being hurt by what others say and think. Lastly, nobody wants anyone o misjudge other in any kind of way.

Satire speech

Can get a show of hands for anyone who honestly enjoys changes within the BBS community? Now, I'm not talking about the change from calling the garden cafe the hub, or the change of calling signature assessments, evaluation. No, I'm talking about big change, the kind of change that has you waiting at the edge of your seat, with your palms sweating, gripping onto the chairs handles like your life depends on it. Are you ready? I'm talking about the change that happened last year, that left many emotionally wounded and causes so many arguments, the change of switching the graduating class' blazer to the white blazers. It might not seem like much, but allow me to elaborate. The problem I'm here to address to you today is not just one strictly about change, but also about the graduating class. Not just about the graduating class this year, but also the many graduates that are yet to come. I believe I speak for a fair amount Of students when I say that it's almost sickening how often the gr aduating class is given all the attention and the credit, despite what the faculty seems to believe. They enjoy giving every important opportunity to the graduating class, while blocking out most of the other grades. The BBS community tries to differentiate them so much more from all other grades that it has become irritating. They've even come to the point of changing their uniform in order to distinguish their importance. According to the American School Board Journal, uniform is meant to â€Å"improve a school's environment by reducing competition, improving student self-esteem, and improving academic achievement. † But ask yourselves, can o really focus on how you can change your 4 to a 4+ in pre-Ap advanced functions, when Holier uniform isn't as cool as the grads? Now, I'm not saying that grade ;level isn't a big year because if I did, would have a trail of prom queen in seven-inch heels running after me. The message I'm striving to convey is strictly questioning whether it's fair or not the amount of praise they receive? But then ask myself, when is anything ever fair, and that's when came up with my solution. Change is inevitable; attempting to stop it is like raying to get in the way of the squirrel from ice age that's chasing after the nut, it's impossible. We all know that even after varies meetings and discussions, where the faculty pretends that they truly take your strong opinions into consideration; it's still their way or no way. You can't deny the fact that they hold those meetings to create an illusion that we actually have a say into what happens to our graduating year. So, I stand here and ask you, how exactly do we fix this problem, actually don't answer that since I already know the perfect answer. Instead of getting rid of the blazers or the school's obsession with the grads, why don't we embrace change? We are always taught to make the best of the situation so here is what propose: we completely change the uniform of the graduating y ear. Don't get worried yet; I know what you're all thinking, but what about the sailor suit collar? Of course that's going to remain a part of the new and improved grads only uniform because we all know how much BBS loves to respect tradition. After all, we still have the head girl position when all other aspects of the leader positions eave changed for the upcoming year. The new excessive uniform is modern, stylish, and affordable, but also very helpful towards the student's wearing it. Allow me to elaborate on this beautiful design that will brighten up your day. It's what I would describe as the future space wear. To simply describe it, it's a dress unlike the sailor suit top and the skirt. The dress will be long sleeve and ends appropriately three inches above your knee. Since it's a dress, girls cannot roll their skirts up, you're welcome male and female teachers of the school. The color the dress will be in shiny metallic silver, in order to outshine the other lower grade studen ts. Students walking past them in the hall won't be able to complain about the grads when they're be temporarily blinded by the reflection of the light off the dress. The most important part of the dress is going to be the red and blue embroidery all along the dress. After reading a recent article from The New York Times, it is said that, â€Å"the color red can make people's work more accurate, but blue can make them more creative.Researchers at the University of British Columbia conducted tests with 600 participants to see how cognitive performance varies when people see red or blue. Red groups did better on tests of recall and attention to detail, like remembering words or checking spelling and punctuation. Blue groups did better on tests requiring invention and imagination. † So clearly, the new uniform is going to help differentiate the grads more from other grades. In the end, change will happen; it might be for the better or the worse but who truly knows until you try? BBS is an ever changing, ever moving community that advances every day from new technology and creative action plans, but we must learn to put our best assets on display to frighten our rival schools. So, lets learn to accept the new change and let be honest, seeing walking space ships would be really cool.

Maurice Sendak the Author

Maurice Bernard Sendak, an award winning writer and illustrator was born on June 10, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York to Philip Sendak and Sadie Schindler, Polish immigrants from small Jewish villages outside Warsaw who came to the United States before World War I. Sendak, the youngest child, along with his sister Natalie, and brother Jack grew up in a poor section of Brooklyn.Sendak was sickly in his early years. He suffered from measles, double pneumonia, and scarlet fever between the ages of two and four and was barely allowed outside to play. He spent a great deal of his childhood at home. To pass the time, he drew pictures and read comic books. His father was a wonderful storyteller, and Maurice grew up enjoying his father's imaginative tales and gaining a lifelong appreciation for books. His sister gave him his first book, Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper. As a young adult, he liked great adventure stories such as Typee and Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Other favorites were Bret Harte's short story, The Luck of Roaring Camp and Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses.Young Sendak didn't like school much. He was obese, sometimes stammered and wasn't good at sports but excelled in his art classes. At home, he and his brother Jack made up their own storybooks by combining newspaper photographs or comic strip segments with drawings they made of family members. Maurice and his brother both inherited their father’s storytelling gift.At age twelve, Sendak with his family saw Walt Disney’s Fantasia, which had influenced him to become a cartoonist. They also went to the local movie houses and occasionally his older sister would take him to Manhattan to see movies at the Roxy or Radio City Music Hall. The 1930s films, including Busby Berkeley musicals and Laurel and Hardy comedies, had a profound influence on some of his illustrations. The World War II influenced Sendak's view of the world as a dark and frightening place. His relatives died in the Holocaust; Natalie's fiancà © was killed and Jack was stationed in the Pacific. Sendak spent the war years in high school, working on the school yearbook, literary magazine, and newspaper. While still in high school, he began his work as illustrator for All-American Comics, drawing background details for the Mutt and Jeff comic strip. At nineteen, he illustrated for his high school biology teacher's book, Atomics for the Millions published in 1947.In 1948, Sendak and his brother Jack, created models for six wooden mechanical toys in the style of German eighteenth-century lever-operated toys. He did the painting and carving, Jack engineered the toys, and Natalie sewed the costumes. The boys took the models to the F.A.O. Schwartz, a famous toy store in New York, where the prototypes were admired. They got turned down because the toys were considered too expensive to produce but the window-display director was impressed with Sendak's talent and hired him as a window dresser. He continued working there for four years while taking night classes at the New York Art Student’s League. He took classes in oil painting, life drawing, and composition. He also spent time in the children's book department studying the great nineteenth-century illustrators such as George Cruikshank, Walter Crane, and Randolph Caldecott as well as the new postwar European illustrators, Hans Fischer, Felix Hoffmann, and Alois Carigiet. While at Schwartz, Sendak met Ursula Nordstrom, the children's book editor at Harper and Brothers.   He was offered to illustrate his first book, Marcel Ayme's The Wonderful Farm (1951) that he did when he was twenty-three.   Nordstrom arranged Sendak’s first great success as the illustrator for. Ruth Krauss’s award winning A Hole Is to Dig (1952). Sendak quit his full time job at Schwartz, move into an apartment in Greenwich Village, and become a freelance illustrator.By the early 1960s, Sendak had become one of the most expressive and interesting illustrators inthe business. The publication of his book, Where the Wild Things are in 1963 brought him internationalacclaim and a place among the world's great illustrators, though the book's portrayals of fanged monstersconcerned critics saying that the book was too scary for sensitive children.Just as Sendak was gaining success, tragedy struck. In 1967, he learned that his mother had developed cancer, he suffered a major coronary attack, and his beloved dog Jenny died. In spite of his troubles, he completed In the Night Kitchen in 1970, which generated more controversy for presenting pictures of a young boy innocently prancing naked through the story. This book regularly appears on the American Library Association's list of frequently challenged and banned books.Twenty years later, with We're all in the Dumps with Jack and Guy (1993), Sendak delivered another jolt. This time the troubling storyline revolved around a kidnapped black baby and two white homeless men . Some critics argued that the illustrations were nightmarish and too strong. Some people felt that his stories were too dark and disturbing for children. But the majority view was that Sendak, through his work, had pioneered a completely new way of writing and illustrating for, and about, children.Over the years he has produced a number of beloved classics, both as a writer and as an illustrator. His works also cover a broad range, not only in subject matter, but also in style and tone, from nursery rhyme stories, like Hector The Protector and As I Went Over The Water, to concept books, like Alligators All Around Us and the marvelous Chicken Soup With Rice. As an illustrator, his projects have included Else Holmelund Minarik's Little Bear, the Newbery winners Wheel on the School and The House of Sixty Fathers with Meindert DeJong, and illustrations of works by Herman Melville (Pierre) and George MacDonald (Light Princess and Golden Key).In 1980, Sendak began to develop productions of opera and ballet for stage and television. He produced an animated TV production based on his work entitled Really Rosie, featuring Carole King, which was broadcast in 1975. He also designs sets and costumes, and even writes librettos. He was invited to design the sets and costumes for the Houston Grand Opera's production of Mozart's The Magic Flute. This began a long collaboration, which included several works such as Sergei Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges and Leos Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Los Angeles County Music Center's 1990 production of Mozart’s Idomeneo, the award-winning Pacific Northwest Ballet production of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Humperdinck’s Hansel And Gretel. In the 1990's, Sendak approached playwright Tony Kushner to write a new English version of the Czech composer Hans Krà ¡sa’s children's opera â€Å"Brundibar†. Kushner wrote the text for Sendak's illustrated book of the same name, publi shed in 2003. The book was named one of the New York Times Book Review's 10 Best Illustrated Books of that year. In 2003, Chicago Opera Theatre produced Sendak and Kushner's adaptation of Brundibar. In 2005 Berkeley Reparatory Theatre, in collaboration with Yale Reparatory Theater and Broadway's New Victory Theater, produced a substantially reworked version of the Sendak-Kushner adaptation.Sendak, who’s been called â€Å"the Picasso of children's books†, has illustrated or written and illustrated over 90 books since 1951 and have garnered so many awards. He received the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are and the Hans Christian Andersen International Medal in 1970 for his body of children's book illustration. He was the recipient of the American Book Award in 1982 for Outside Over There. He also received in 1983 the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for his contributions to children's literature. In 1996, President Bill Clinton honored Sendak with the National Medal of Arts. In 2003, Maurice Sendak and Austrian author Christine Noestlinger shared the first Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for Literature given by the Swedish government.Sendak, now seventy-eight, has been a major force in the evolution of children's literature. He is considered by many critics and scholars to be the first artist to deal openly with the emotions of children in his drawings both in books and on the stage, in his opera and ballet sets and costumes. This abilityto accurately depict raw emotion is what makes him so appealing to children.ReferencesKennedy, E. The Artistry and Influence of Maurice Sendak. Your Guide to Children’s Books. Gas consumption in the united states Research Paper

Gas consumption in the united states - Research Paper Example A study of gas consumption can help alleviate challenge and improve on efficient use of the commodity. The negative externalities can also be addressed after knowing the extent of gasoline use. The purpose of this research paper is to find how petrol tax, average income, proportion of driver’s population, paved way affects consumption of petrol gas. For this research, the data covers forty eight states and the sample represents the whole population. Introduction The research bases its data from the individual that owns vehicles and firm owner with the appliance that use petrol. Furthermore, the research targets small and large companies all industries. The availability of this information is crucial in preparing this report as it assures of credibility of the source of raw data. The report is reliable because the majorities of the respondent are literate and have the expertise and ability to give information accurately and provide insight in the gas industry. The report relies on a grass root survey of the entire gas industry for one year and forecasts on future consumption. The forecast of the report reveals a combined outcome of an entire target population. The methods used to collect and analyses the data limit a margin of error less than plus or minus 0.2%. Therefore, I can guarantee that the research paper provides a true picture of gas consumption in a year (Hejny S, etal 2003). ... dia have reported that gasoline has become cheaper, and the U.S is less dependent on imports from the Middle East, but this information remains elusive. The president on September 18 said that the country is not yet oil independent, but there is a boom of oil production that could benefit the country in future (Stratfor Geopolitical Diary, 2013). Oil production in the country skyrocketed to a high of 8 million barrels in a day, the highest production since 1989. Energy is used in heating and production of petrochemicals products. The usage can be broadly categorized to power generation and transport fuels. All the countries energy comprises natural gas, renewable wind power, coal, and finally nuclear power. In the U.S, petrol is derived from imports and domestic production of crude oil. The country produce it own coal and is almost being independent in its natural gas. The U.S and Canada oil deposit are not sufficient to rid off the country from global suppliers (Stratfor Geopolitica l Diary, 2013). One of the main agenda of the U.S government is security, and the country cannot produce enough energy for its people. Therefore, increasing production of oil ensures energy security for the country. However, this cannot be the only way to cure ‘addiction’ to oil. Companies like the GM and Tesla are now developing electric cars that use battery instead of oil. This technology can swipe the use of gas to electricity in the near future (Stratfor Geopolitical Diary, 2013)Â   The energy consumption in the United States has decreased compared to China. China currently tops the world in energy consumption. The U.S consumption has decreased by 1.6% since 2007. It has, however, consumed twice that of the European countries. In 2011, oil was the main source of energy at 36% with

Business Policy & Strategy Portfolio Project Essay

Business Policy & Strategy Portfolio Project - Essay Example The business will provide these students with door to door collection and distribution of the torn cloths and cloths that require laundry services. The Laundry and cloth repair business will solve problems such as saving University Students time, saving the Environment from degradation, and boosting Food Security among other others. The business is also sustainable in that it boosts food security, conserve our environment, as well as solving some of the Problems University Students face among others. In to prove the feasibility of the business, market research, and SWOT and Value chain analyses were carried out. The SWOT analysis was carried out in order to identify the expected Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats that the business may face. The Laundry and cloth repair business Idea In today’s economy, people are normally busy (they always work, they always learn, committed in entertainment, and in schools and among others) such that they do not get time to do ce rtain basic things of their lives such as laundry services and repair of their torn cloths. ... However, not all of them offer door to services to these busy students. Therefore, students had to waste their precious time taking their cloth for laundry services or to be repaired in case they are torn (U S Bureau of the Census, 2002). Some students may also love some of their cloths such that they may not wish to dispose them off in case they get torn. Therefore, my business will be engaged in providing laundry and cloth repair services for University students in the United States of America. The business will provide these students with door to door collection and distribution of the torn cloths and cloths that require laundry services. Rationale for the Business Idea Entrepreneurs by nature are individuals who solve problems, as wells as opportunity oriented; these are just a few of the many characteristics of entrepreneurs (Hunter, 2000). Therefore, as an entrepreneur I thought it wise to come up with the business idea so as to be part of those who solve problems that normally face our society today. My business, therefore, aims at solving several problems which face our society today. Problems Laundry and cloth repair business will solve Saving University Students time The target customers (target group) for the business are University Students across the United States of America. Just as earlier mentioned, these students are so committed to their studies, research and entertainment activities such that they have very little amount of time to concentrate on the basic aspects of their lives; they hardly get time to do their laundry services or even repair services for their torn cloths. The business also intends to further offer free collection and distribution services to these
